Flocks develops two key aspects of Iranian music within the context of a Western music ensemble made up of flute (piccolo), clarinet, horn, trombone, string quintet and two percussionists. Key features of this piece include its use of microtonality in the strings and fluid, highly-decorated melody lines in the winds, both representing different bird-like behaviour.

This recording features members of the Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Music Ensemble.
